Mata’s heart pounded in his ears as his breath came in short spurts as he darted through the darkness. The halls were winding, twisting and turning, giving him no time to think as he turned the next corner. The air whipped past him, hot and humid on his skin. His shirt clung tightly to him as he leaped over an uneven space in the floor. He forged ahead, navigating the path as if he had done it a dozen times before.

He felt liberated as the blood pumped through his veins. He was lost, but slowly remembering where to go. With each step, he freed himself from his feelings about Xena and his grudge against Amos. Turning another corner, he ducked under a fallen beam from the ceiling, a testament to the ship’s current state. He wouldn’t mind losing himself here, to this state of release. Suddenly his attention snapped to the being yards ahead of him, shrouded in darkness, seemingly hidden.

But not for long.

His pace picked up, his breath coming faster as his heart drummed in his chest. A rush of adrenaline overtook his senses as he descended on his target, its eyes wide and body pinned in place. They never stood a chance. Mata’s arms darted out, capturing the being in an iron grip, their shriek echoing throughout the dark halls.

There was no one there to hear it.

The being cowered, their big dark eyes misting over as their thin lips quivered. Their skin drained of color as their body shook, wracked with fear. Mata looked down at them, seeing the being through new eyes. The only thing running through his mind was how he was going to deal with the prize of his hunt.

The thick layer of perspiration that covered Mata slowly dripped down on the being, splashing onto their face, causing them to wince. Mata’s fingers dug into the being’s damp flesh as he drew their body even closer.

He was the hunter. And there was nothing but the thrill of the chase. No Xena, no Amos, nothing. He still felt himself fighting against his new role. He ignored it, throwing the creature to the floor, slamming his heel into its chest before it could gather its wits and escape.

This could be his life now, if he gave in. He could uproot the resentment about everything that had happened to him, the wailing aggression and possessiveness, until there was only silence.

He could end his suffering. All it would take was total submission to what he was becoming.
